Gold Coast Tourism is booming as it moves up the ranks!!

Gold Coast second to Sydney in TripAdvisor list of popular places in Australia.

Gold Coast Tourism is trumpeting the city’s elevation to second most-favoured visitor destination in the country on TripAdvisor as a major coup.

Visitors surveyed by the popular reviews website ranked the Gold Coast second only to Sydney but ahead of Melbourne which sits in third.

The results, for the year to late March, 2016, ranked Brisbane fourth, Cairns fifth then Port Douglas, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide and Noosa.

Revealing the coveted runner-up spot to 250 Gold Coast business and community leaders yesterday while outlining strategy for the year ahead, Gold Coast Tourism chief executive Martin Winter said it was “quite an achievement”.

“We have Sydney in our sights — and we are gunning for them,” he said.

RIDING TOURISM’S $48B WAVE

After the briefing, Mr Winter said he placed plenty of weight on the TripAdvisor ranking, saying visitor reviews on the site which has 280 million users were among the industry’s most relevant.

“The peer-to-peer review is so important — what people say about you to each other is so much more important than how we tell our story.

“It’s the digital world and is what drives desirability. It’s becoming the way of the world.

“It will have peeved Melbourne off — Melbourne has always been our nemesis,” he said.

The Gold Coast page on the TripAdvisor list highlights Burleigh Heads and Surfers Paradise beaches plus the SkyPoint Climb to the top of the Q1 building as “don’t miss” activities.

It also contains a link to 516 other things to do on the Gold Coast.

Other Gold Coast TripAdvisor coups this year include Surfers Paradise beach ranked third best in Australia behind Whitehaven at the Whitsunday Islands and Manly in Sydney.

Surfers Paradise was also 10th for “South Pacific destinations on the rise”, a list led by Brisbane with New Zealand resort Queenstown second.

Gold Coast Tourism chief marketing Jan Hutton said peer-to-peer reviews on TripAdvisor and similar aggregator sites were something the industry needed to pay attention to, with a new survey of 2000 travellers showing 81 per cent considered reviews important to booking choices.

The same survey showed, on average, travellers checked six to 12 reviews before making bookings, she said.

“They are substantial numbers. It’s an unbelievably important tool,” she said.

Mr Winter’s presentation noted the Gold Coast achieved total visitor numbers for the year to March of 12.9 million which included a 20 per cent increase out of China.

The Gold Coast attracted 23.2 million visitor nights to March, 2016, up 1.6 million on the previous 12 months.

The revenue per room for the first half of this year had grown 9.1 per cent on the same period last year, triple the national average growth rate.
